Canalys: 998 million smartphones shipped in 2013, 79 percent of them Android

Echoing figures by IDC and Strategy Analytics, market research firm Canalys (via The Next Web) said there were 998 million smartphones shipped in 2013, a 44 percent increase from 2012. Of those, 79 percent were Android powered.

That figure was up from 68 percent in 2012. At the same time, Apple’s iOS market share fell from 20 percent in 2012 to 15 percent, despite seeing sales increase to 154 million.

Meanwhile, giant rival Samsung's market share grew from 30 percent in 2012 to 32 percent in 2013.

Apple was in second position with Huawei slipping past Lenovo into third plzce. However, as the difference between the two vendors was only five million units, Lenovo’s acquisition of Motorola from Google, should it be approved, would put Lenovo back in the "Show" position.

Despite the fact that it still trails badly, Windows Phone saw the fastest year-over-year growth among the major platforms, at 69 percent. Meanwhile, Android shipments rose 54 percent, and iOS shipments only a modest 7 percent.
