Microsoft Office Mobile reaches Android, but no tablets need apply

Android fans can celebrate, more or less, as on Wednesday Microsoft unveiled Office for Android, or the more fully named Office Mobile for Office 365 in the Google Play Store.

As on iOS, the app eschews tablets and only supports phones. That seems like a strange decision for us, but Microsoft says no tablet version is in the works, and says that tablet owners should use the Office Web Apps version.

Once again, as in other versions of the app, any editing functionality is severely limited. Office Mobile is designed to be used for minor corrections, changes in formatting, and comments.

One difference from the iPhone version is that there is no option to purchase an Office 365 subscription in-app. Instead, users see a sign-in that requires them to already have an active subscription.

Office Mobile for Office 365 has already rolled out today in the Google Play Store for U.S. customers. Microsoft says it's "gradually" expanding to 33 other languages and 117 markets soon.

The blurb in the Google Play Store is:
Please note: Office Mobile requires a qualifying Office 365 subscription. (See requirements below).
