Amazon Appstore's free app of the day: Word Off has promised to make a paid app free every day in the Amazon Appstore, and today's app is Word Off.

Word Off is is free, but ad-supported in Google Play; it is normally priced at $0.99 at the Amazon Appstore. As we've noted before, there are sometimes differences in pricing and availability between the two marketplaces.

EDGE Extended is described as follows:
Play Ad-Free version of Word Off! The addicting strategy word game everybody is talking about! Experience for yourself why so many people are addicted to this word spelling, territory capturing choose from over 10 unique boards word game.

"Word Off Makes Spelling Into A Territorial Death Match" -

"Not only is it extremely creative artistically - but it is fun and addicting. 5 stars for this innovative delight!"

Play with your friends in a turn-based word game that will have you spelling your way to victory. Will you try and claim the most territory or are you the sneaky type that will try and capture your friend’s base?

We value your device and want to treat it with respect. Please find the following explanation of our need for permissions:

Word Off must be connected to the Internet to play. These permissions check for network connectivity to enable gameplay.

Word Off is turn-based, no turn is no fun. Push Notifications allow Word Off to notify you or your opponant that it's their or your turn.
**Push Notifications can be disabled under Settings**

Word Off has audio built into the app this allows you to adjust the game volume with the device keys

Word off is more fun with more friends. To ease this process we've provided a tool that allows you to choose any contacts you may want to invite. This data never leaves your phone and you must provide permission for it's use.

PLEASE NOTE: This app lets you purchase digital content using actual money. You can configure parental controls for in-app purchases, which will require your Amazon account password or a 4-digit PIN, by going to the Settings menu from within the Amazon Appstore.
Word Off has a 4.1-star rating in Google Play and 2.7 stars in the Amazon Appstore.

It's hard to understand the difference in ratings, because the negative ratings in the Amazon Appstore were about poor gameplay, or overly simplistic gameplay. A few negative ratings involved the requirement to log-in to Facebook.

We'd still give it a try while it is free.

There is also a version of the app in the iOS App Store. It is free, but has a number of in-app purchases. It has 4-stars for the current version and 4.5-stars overall.

We continue to be disappointed with the FAOTD program. It began promisingly enough, with Angry Birds Rio, but we've gotten tired of the endless games or niche apps, and especially apps which have no uptake in Google Play, and seem to be FAOTD as a desperation move by the developer.

We'd like to see free versions of say, Office-compatible software or useful utilities such as CalenGoo instead of niche apps or endless games (we just assume every day that it's going to be a game; it's gotten that bad). opened up the Appstore despite a lawsuit by Apple, which has previously trademarked the term "App Store." Microsoft has filed an appeal against that trademark, saying the term is too generic. has responded to the lawsuit in the same manner.
