To be clear, this is Iran's Grand Ayatollah, not its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The president is the highest popularly elected (and we use the term loosely) official in Iran, but his office is subordinate to the Supreme Leader of Iran, who functions as the country's head of state.
The new Instagram account can be found here.
The account currently has 844 followers, and only six photos have been uploaded thus far, so Khamenei, or rather, his publicists, had better get working and install either the iOS or Android app on their devices.
Comments on the account range from the rather innocent "May Allah bless u Good Health!!" to the more inflammatory "Hope you die this year and free ur people..."
Instagram, of course, is the hugely popular photo-sharing service. In April of this year (and prior to going public), Facebook made an offer to purchase Instagram and its 13 employees for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. The deal's closing awaits Federal Trade Commission (FTC) approval.
