BitTorrent, for those who don't know, is the popular peer-to-peer (P2P) filesharing protocol. While it has illicit uses, it also has legitimate ones. Sharing the sci-fi flick "District 9" is not one of them.
TorrentFreak has compiled a list of the Best Picture nominees, in order of downloads. If you assume each download counts as a vote, and including all manner of downloads (such as a complete DVD rip, shaky cam versions, AVIs, etc.) "District 9" comes out on top, over a million votes better than "Avatar," with "The Hurt Locker trailing badly in third."
As TorrentFreak points out, however, some of these movies have been available online for more than a year, while others only have only been leaked to the web for a short period. Additionally, those who wait for DVD quality downloads will have noted that "Avatar" only became available in DVD-quality a month ago, but "District 9" was widely available last September.
Still, it is an interesting poll. Here are the Oscar nominees in download order:
