While it's no secret that Microsoft has been working on getting Windows XP to run on the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Foundation's XO-1, they also said in December that it wasn't exactly an easy process. Despite this, Wednesday, the chairman of the OLPC, Nicholas Negroponte, indicated they are working on a dual-boot version of the XO-1. He said:"We are working with them very closely to make a dual-boot system so that, like on an Apple, you can boot either one up. The version that's up and running of Windows on the XO is very fast, it's very, very successful. We're working very hard to do both."
I find it hard to believe that the XO-1, in its current configuration, could run Windows XP "very fast." And a dual-boot machine? Already Microsoft was discussing how they were going to have to fit XP on an SD card in order to get it to work within the limited confines of the XO-1. The only way I could see this working is if the laptop (XO-2?) had more memory or storage capability.
At any rate, Windows XP would really help the XO-1, dual-boot or no. It would eliminate one of the advantages of the ASUS Eee PC, which is XP-capable, though it hasn't shipped with that OS yet.

BART PE, a 'version' of Windows XP created for diagnostic use, fits into a couple hundred megabytes (Mb.) and runs well. It was originally designed to boot and run completely from CDs, and now, flash drives.

It can be easily expanded, and has been, by the use of plug-ins for software and drivers. So, what's Microsoft's excuse?
