Apple issues recall on prior generation MacBook Air SSDs

Their fans may think Apple is perfect, but the company is not. The company announced a recall of 64GB and 128GB SSDs that were used in its MacBook Airs. To be clear, these are models sold from June 2012 and June 2013, as the company announced on Thursday.

The models involved are from the prior generation MBAs, not the current one. Those with affected systems can get a free SSD replacement at a local Apple retail or, or via an authorized service provider.

It's easy to see if your MBA is affected. You don't even have to check your serial number, as is typical with many of these recalls. Instead, simply go to the Mac App Store and select MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1. The firmware update will test your drive, and if it is affected, it will bring userss back to the support page for next steps.

Sadly, although Apple or an authorized service provider will replace the drive, users will be responsible for backing up and then restoring their systems' data and applications.

Those who may have paid for a replaceement on their own should contact Apple for a refund.

Customers should run, not walk to the nearest representative. Apple emphasized the following:
IMPORTANT: If your drive is affected, we strongly recommend that you do not install any operating system updates or new applications. We also recommend backing up your data on a regular basis until you receive a replacement drive.
This, obviously, is less about Apple and more about its parts suppliers. Still, users should make sure they check their drives and fix them ASAP if necessary, as quickly as possible.
