Walmart offering discounted iPhone 5C, 5S prices: $79, $189 pricing

Walmart confirmed on Thursday (via CNet) that prices on the new iPhone 5C and 5S are falling, or rather, have fallen. The retail giant said it will sell the iPhone 5C for $79, $20 less than Apple, and the iPhone 5S for $189, $10 less than Apple.

These prices require, naturally, a two-year service agreement.

Whereas Apple said that iPhone 5C pre-orders begin online on Friday at 12:01 a.m. PDT -- which, since it is Friday the 13th, probably means bad luck for Apple's server support staff -- Walmart said customers can pre-order the 5C at their local Walmart store, also on Friday. Pre-orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis and must be picked up by Sept. 25.

The iPhone 5C reaches retail stores on Friday, Sept. 20, the same day as the company's flagship iPhone 5S. The 5S, however, won't have a pre-order period. That means that folks who want one on launch day, Sept. 20, will be forced tio stand in line.

Customers can begin ordering the iPhone 5S online on Sept. 20, the same date as the retail launch.

Customers should remember that the lower prices at Walmart come at "a price." Walmart, like other Apple partners, receives minimum inventory compared to Apple's retail stores, which receive the lion's share of devices.
