At an event launching the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, D.J. Lee, Samsung's mobile business head of strategic marketing said:
We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October. It is unclear if the glass will simply be curved, or if the screen will flexible and bendable.
Lee offered no further details about the impending announcement or the handset's specifications. Samsung first showed off a prototype flexible AMOLED screen at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in 2011. In July, the Korean giant, which is the largest cell phone -- not just smartphone -- manufacturer in the world, overtook Apple as the world's most profitable smartphone maker.
In January of this year, at CES 2013, Samsung showed a prototype smartphone featuring a flexible screen and a display that extends from the side of a device. This device, called Youm, can be seen in an embedded video.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which was recently launched and hit its first retail shelves -- though not in the U.S. -- on Wednesday, was rumored to sport a curved screen, but instead it shipped with a flat, 1.63-inch AMOLED display.
