Imagination confirmed on Wednesday that the Galaxy S IV will transition from ARM graphics to Imagination's PowerVR SGX 544MP3 GPU. The iPhone 5 carries the Imagination PowerVR SGX 543MP3 in a triple-core configuration. It's believed that the GS4 will also sport a triple-core GPU.
In the Galaxy S IV, the PowerVR chip will be paired with Samsung's eight-core Octa Exynos 5410, but that pairing will only exist in non-U.S. devices. Devices in the U.S., because of LTE, will sport a Qualcomm quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor that comes with a (still) ARM-based Adreno 320 GPU.
The iPhone 5's 543MP3 GPU and the Galaxy S IV's 544MP3 are nearly identical chips, but the 544 supports Microsoft's DirectX 9.3. In addition, Samsung's GPU is expected to run at a higher clock speed than Apple's. The iPhone 5's 544 runs at 350Mhz, and it's reported that the GS4's GPU will run at 500MHz.
Although details about the GS4 continue to leak in the run-up to tonight's announcement, Imagination's reveal is the first confirmed hardware specification for the device. Other expected hardware includes:
- An eight-core Samsung Exynos 5 Octa processor or quad-core Qualcomm 600 processor
- 2 GB of RAM
- A 4.99-inch SuperAMOLED display
- A 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with 1080p video capability
- A 2-megapixel front-facing camera
