Amazon Appstore's free app of the day for Feb. 12, 2013: Mysteryville 2

Amazon.com has promised to make a paid app free every day in the Amazon Appstore, and today's app is Mysteryville 2: Hidden Object Crime Adventure.

Mysteryville 2: Hidden Object Crime Adventure is priced at $0.99 in Google Play; it is normally priced at $0.99 at the Amazon Appstore. As we've noted before, there are sometimes differences in pricing and availability between the two marketplaces.

Mysteryville 2: Hidden Object Crime Adventure is described as follows:
Brave and talented journalist Laura Winner returns to the small town that everyone remembers from the award winning game Mysteryville. And once again she finds herself at the epicenter of a scandal. She plans to take a vacation and relax with her friend Bill Witowsky and ruined when she arrives to find that Bill is missing. She starts her own investigation and also discovers that the town’s new priest is about to organize an art and jewelery auction, something rather unusual for this small rural local. Could Bill's disappearance be somehow linked to the auction? It's up to Laura to find out.

Search for and find all the clues to help you solve the case. Pieces of paper become important evidence, and a mysterious anagram will help direct your investigation. The most important thing is not to waste any time, Mysteryville won’t be safe until you solve the case of Bill’s disappearance.

- An intriguing and interesting plot
- Fantastic, colorful graphics
- Interesting and varied mini-games
- The atmosphere of a great detective story
- Breathtaking gameplay.

Will Laura figure out what is actually happening in this small rural town and close the case?

Mysteryville 2: Hidden Object Crime Adventure has a 4.3-star rating in Google Play and is also an Editor's Choice. It has a 3.4-star rating in the Amazon Appstore.

We'd definitely buy this while it was free.

There is also an HD version in the iOS App Store. There it is priced at $4.99 and has 4 stars overall.

We continue to be disappointed with the FAOTD program. It began promisingly enough, with Angry Birds Rio, but we've gotten tired of the endless games or niche apps, and especially apps which have no uptake in Google Play, and seem to be FAOTD as a desperation move by the developer.

We'd like to see free versions of say, Office-compatible software or useful utilities such as CalenGoo instead of niche apps or endless games (we just assume every day that it's going to be a game; it's gotten that bad).

Amazon.com opened up the Appstore despite a lawsuit by Apple, which has previously trademarked the term "App Store." Microsoft has filed an appeal against that trademark, saying the term is too generic. Amazon.com has responded to the lawsuit in the same manner.

Apple has already lost a portion of that lawsuit, which said Amazon.com had participated in "false advertising."
