Te'oing meme birthed as Manti Te'o dead girlfriend scandal heats up

As you might expect in this age of memes, Manti Te'o is being mocked online in the wake of the revelation that emerged on Wednesday, Jan. 16: His beloved girlfriend, who died on Sept. 12, 2012 of leukemia, never existed.

Those who remember the "McKayla Maroney is not impressed" meme and "Eastwooding," will wonder if a Tumblr blog has been created. As of Thursday, it has.

The new meme is called Te'oing (sometimes Teoing or Teo-ing). Inspired by the Manti Te'o dead-girlfriend-who-never-existed scandal, it shows images of submitters with their invisible girlfriends, or other, snarkier images.

Among them were:
  • Te'o in a Fantastic Four costume (Sue Richards, Invisible Girl) with the caption "Invisble girlfriend. She's real to me."
  • A dog speaking into a phone with the caption "Hello? Yes, this is Lennay Kakua."
  • A combination "Eastwooding" / "Te'oing" image, showing Clint Eastwood talking to his empty chair, with the caption "The original."
There are many more, and Twitter is being flooded as well, with the hashtag #teoing. A slideshow of images can be found here.

The story broke yesterday: Notre Dame linebacker and Heisman finalist Manti Te'o's girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, who he claimed inspired him to greater feats, never existed.

Supposedly, she died from leukemia just hours after Te'o's grandmother died, on Sept. 12. He then went out on Sept. 15 and -- inspired by both of them -- made a season-high 12 tackles, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery in a 20-3 victory against the Michigan State Spartans.

What really happened? The details are still vague.

Notre Dame has said that Manti Te'o will address the media over the scandal later today.
