It's a relatively minor update -- at least, compared to going from 5.x to 6.0 or from 6.1 to the upcoming 7.0.
To initiate the download of the update manually from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings, General, Software Update. iOS will display installation instructions and release information there.
The update includes the following improvements for iOS device users (naturally, assuming your device supports the functionality):
- LTE support for more carriers (Apple previously announced that it would add more LTE carriers this week). 36 additional iPhone carriers. 23 additional iPad carriers.
- Purchase movie tickets through Fandango via Siri (US only)
- iTunes Match subscribers can now download individual songs from iCloud
- New button to reset the Advertising Identifier.
When Google Maps returned to iOS after Apple booted it from the iOS 6 ROM image, Google also added similar APIs.
iOS 6.1 can be installed on the following devices: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod Touch (4th generation), iPod Touch (5th generation), iPad 2, iPad (3rd generation), iPad (4th generation) and iPad mini.
Apple's official iOS 6.1 press release follows:
