A.I. voice in 'Pacific Rim' to be less like 'Portal's' GLaDOS in final film: del Toro

Guillermo del Toro was quite clear when speaking to the Toronto Sun on Friday: Yes, the A.I. voice heard in the "Pacific Rim" trailer released in December (embedded) was indeed GLaDOS from the video game "Portal" (1, 2), but no, the resemblance to "Portal" won't be quite so pronounced in the actual film.

It was quite evident to fans of Valve's "Portal" games when the trailer was released that the A.I.voice in the film was the voice of GLaDOS (voice actress Ellen McLain). The director said on Friday that he intentionally ensured that the voice was quite evident in the trailer. He made sure, as well, that he received the permission of Valve to do so. He added, though, that the A.I. voice won't sound anywhere near as much as GLaDOS in the final film.

It's an interesting thought, however. After all, in "Pacific Rim," legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, rise from the ocean, coming through a -- you got it -- portal between dimensions in the Pacific Ocean.

As del Toro said in the interview:
I wanted very much to have her, because I’m a big Portal fan, but just as a wink. She’s not cake-obsessed. She’s not out to destroy humanity.

I said, "Look, there’s no A.I. I’d rather have than GlaDOS. The filter we’re using [in the film] is slightly less GLaDOS. Slightly. The one in the trailer I wanted to be full-on GlaDOS.
McLain’s voice in the film, he said, has been modulated to be less similar to the distinctive tone of "Portal" and "Portal 2’s" antagonistic A.I.

As he was speaking mostly about video games, del Toro also addressed his long-in-development survival horror game inSANE. inSANE was cancelled in 2012 by THQ, but del Toro said someone else is close to picking up the game.
We are in talks with a very, very big company. I can’t say who, but it’s one of the big ones. They really responded to the game, they responded to what we were trying.

Some of the devices of the game I need to update, because now I’ve seen them in other games that just came out. That always happens. But the principle we’re trying to do with the game is to make it a really immersive narrative experience. It’s still a really challenging proposal.
The plot of "Pacific Rim's" is described as follows:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, start rising from the sea, a war begins that takes millions of lives and consumes humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon is devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers prove nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.

On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
"Pacific Rim" opens in 2D, 3D, IMAX and IMAX 3D theaters on July 12. It stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke and Diego Klattenhoff.
