'Day of Cease Fire' begins for online gamers in parts of the world

As talk of gun control and secularism swirls around the nation after the horrific massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, there is some -- though not a lot -- of discussion about the possible role of video games in increased violence in society. Antwand Pearman is the CEO and Founder of GamerFitNation, and while he doesn't see a connection, he does think gamers should show the nation they too, are mourning the deaths of the 20 children and seven adults who were killed.

Pearman is calling for a day of mourning on Dec. 21. Exactly one week after the Newtown, Conn. massacre, it's being used as a day of mourning for many, so why shouldn't video gamers join in, as well?

In fact, it's already Dec. 21 in some parts of the world, and gamers have already begun. GamerFitNation tweeted:
WOW, it has begun! We just got reports that #Gamers in #Australia have Already Begun the #OSCeaseFire since it's Already Dec 21st, there.
Pearman and others have promoted the cease-fire (#osceasefire) on social media, including Facebook and Twitter. Many have vowed to join in on a day of jonesing for their favorite online first-person or third-person shooter.

Here is the Facebook post about the Day of Cease Fire:
GamerFitNation Inc's CEO Antwand Pearman is calling for a “DAY OF CEASE FIRE" on all online shooters on Friday, December 21st, 2012. We ask for Gamers to show their support for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy that took place in a Connecticut's Sandy Hook elementary school Friday, December 14, 2012.
Post on this Event Page that you will “Cease Fire” For the day. 26 people were shot dead, 20 of them were young children. We are not asking for money, but if you feel the need to donate I'm sure there are places that will be made available for you.

We are simply making a statement that we as Gamers are not going to sit back and ignore the lives that were lost. Instead we will embace the families with our love and support. So if you are an owner of a website I ask that you post to your readers that you will join us in our "DAY OF CEASE FIRE FOR ONLINE SHOOTERS” I ask you all to please share and I thank you for reading. This starts Thursday night, Friday morning at 12am and will in Friday night, Saturday morning at 12am.

If you are online at the time change your comment window to “OSCeaseFire” If you are on a social network used the hashtag #OSCeaseFire. If you see people participating on the Dec 21st, post pictures on this page.

Thank You For Your Support-CEO Antwand Pearman GamerFitNation.com
Notably, some are and will blame -- at least partially -- video games for the Sandy Hook shootings and other mass murders. As Pearman says:
You can't blame a video game for something like that -- the real reason is mental health and gun control. He shouldn't have been able to get the type of assault weapons he had.
The Day of Cease Fire online will begin on Friday morning at midnight, local time, and last 24 hours.

On Friday, Dec. 14, Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother, took some of her guns, and forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.  He used an assault rifle to kill 20 kindergarten age students and six adults, before killing himself with a handgun as police closed in.
