'Binders Full of Women' becomes the newest Mitt Romney meme

Mitt Romney, attempting to connect with women during the second presidential debate on Tuesday night, used the phrase "binders full of women," and that sounded so much like fodder for a meme. Overnight, a Facebook page and Tumblr blog arose, along with a Twitter hashtage (#BindersFullofWomen) and thus we have a full-fledged meme.

The tumblr blog is located at The Facebook page is at

During the debate, Romney said that when he assembled his Cabinet when he was elected governor of Massachusetts "we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our Cabinet. I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks,' and they brought us whole binders full of women."

Romney apparently used the binder, as he added that after he filled his Cabinet and senior staff, the University of New York in Albany surveyed all 50 states, and determined that his staff had more women in senior leadership positions than any other state.

Of course, that message was completely obliterated after his "binders full of women" comment.

The Internet was flooded, and the Tumblr blog has numerous hilarious entries. There is, for example, one titled "Lord of Three Rings." There is another that has Romney looking stern, with Obama in the background, with Romney saying "What do you mean he has an iPad full of women?" Obama is known to have an iPad.

A liberal "super PAC," American Bridge, announced that it had purchased the domain name to "educate voters on Romney's REAL record on issues important to women." That site is already up and running, with following message on the home page:

"Rather than admit that he has refused to say whether he would have signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and that his running mate voted against it, Romney instead spoke about being given 'whole binders full of women' to consider when his closest advisers were incapable of identifying qualified women for his cabinet.

"But as governor of Massachusetts, Romney neglected to elevate women to the bench by disproportionately nominating white males for judicial appointments."

In terms of Twitter, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof tweeted, "I see #BindersFullofWomen is trending, but my take is that women should be holding up half the sky, not filling binders," which had been re-tweeted nearly 1,300 times by late morning PT on Wednesday. The fake Al-Qaede Twitter account tweeted, "We want to keep women in chains, @MittRomney keeps his in binders. I think we could work with this guy. #bindersfullofwomen"
