Action for mask of 'Dark Knight Rises' shooter James Holmes appears briefly on eBay

A James Holmes Halloween mask appeared on the online auction site eBay for a short time on Friday, before eBay removed it for violating the site's Terms of Service.

The auction was created by the user realface13, who had not previously run an auction, and is not currently running any, either. The auction had been created with the opening bid set at $500.

The blurb on the auction said:

“SHOCK EVERYONE YOU KNOW! There is nothing more scary than crawling into James Holmes mind and wearing his face. His ‘soul penetrating eyes’ and ‘The Joker’ orange hair make this mask the most disturbing object you will ever own.

"Imagine owning the mask of supposedly the most dangerous mass murderer in US history.”

The seller also claimed that he had won the mask in a high-stakes poker tournament in Europe. It was, the seller asserted, custom-designed and made for a private collector. The seller also referred to an unidentified documentary he said will be released in 2013.

eBay issued the following statement once it removed the auction from their site:

“The listing was removed because it did not comply with our Offensive Materials policy. Out of respect for victims of violent crimes, eBay does not allow listings that attempt to profit from human tragedy or suffering."

James Holmes, 24, is currently under arrest for what has been dubbed the "Dark Knight Rises massacre," which took place at a midnight premiere showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado on July 20.

Armed with extensive weaponry and tear gas, Holmes allegedly opened fire in the crowded theater. Twelve people were killed, including a 6-year-old girl, and 58 others were wounded. Holmes' next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 11 at 9:00 am MDT.
