The swine: 'Bad Piggies' to spin-off from 'Angry Birds'

"Bad piggies, bad piggies." After Sept. 27, that statement will not longer be used only to refer to naughty swine, but instead to a new video game from the makers of Angry Birds, Rovio.

On Tuesday, Rovio announced that its Angry Birds franchise will spin off a new game, one based on the villains of the current games, Bad Piggies. Indeed, the swine will get their own chance to shine.

The company announced the development on the Angry Birds Facebook page, saying:

"Squawk! The pigs have revealed their plans! The birds hear there's a new Bad Piggies game coming out on September 27th - with no slingshot in sight! Keep an eye on the pigs here:!"

Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio said,

“There’s a lot of empathy towards the lovable enemies from the Angry Birds games, and we’ve been constantly asked: what about the pigs’ side of the story? Bad Piggies gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the Angry Birds universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes.”

Petri Järvilehto, EVP Games at Rovio said,

“We’ve had a lot of fun creating a totally new and unique gameplay experience. There’s so much more to these pigs than what is seen in the Angry Birds games, and Bad Piggies is the first glimpse into what’s going on in the imaginative and ingenious minds of the pigs.”

Despite the fact that Bad Piggies is a spin-off, it's still a chance for Rovio to prove that it is not a one-hit wonder (albeit, an extremely successful one).

“Angry Birds” surpassed a billion downloads in May, according to the company. In addition, the company announced a net profit of $60 million on sales of $106.3 million in 2011. It also said it wants to complete an IPO by the end of 2013.

"Bad Piggies" will launch on Android, iOS, and Mac on September 27, with versions for Windows Phone, Windows 8 and PCs will to follow at a later date, the company said.
