Apple confirms Sept. 12 iPhone 5 launch event

It's almost here, and although we already knew it, Apple has confirmed it. Apple has invited the media to a press event on Wednesday, Sept. 12.  The event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

The invitation being sent to the press simply says "It's almost here." Not only that, though, the image of the number 12, for Sept. 12, actually casts a shadow of the number 5.

That not only confirms that the event will be regarding Apple's next generation iPhone, it also confirms that Apple won't call it the "new iPhone," as it did with the third-generation iPad.

With that, all doubt is cast aside. The event is being held to launch the iPhone 5.

We have a roundup of the iPhone 5 rumors to date, here.

Among the more significant rumors are:
  • Elongated 4-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio
  • 4G LTE support
  • Slightly larger battery
  • Centered FaceTime camera
  • Headset jack moved to the bottom of the device
  • New, smaller, nine-pin dock connector
Other rumors are less solid, such as NFC support built-into the device (and the latest rumors appear to nix that).

We'll find out in about eight days.
