Walmart to assist in 'launch' of Angry Birds Space with special promotion

Angry Birds Space, the latest game in the series, is set to launch on Thursday. Called "the biggest game launch since the original Angry Birds" by developer Rovio, it's about to get a boost from the world's biggest retailer: Walmart.

Clues to Angry Birds Space will be hidden in select limited-edition Angry Birds Space merchandise, including clothes, mobile phones, plush toys, snacks, and still more starting on March 25.

Naturally, Rovio already has its own Angry Birds Facebook page, but Walmart will create one that goes live on March 22, as well. Fans who "like" the page will receive access to one of four "Golden Eggsteroid" clues, which can unlock secret Angry Birds Space levels.

Peter Vesterbacka, chief marketing officer and Mighty Eagle of Rovio said, “We wanted to give our fans a unique retail extension to Angry Birds Space that rewards them for their eagle eyes. Only Walmart can deliver the reach across America for this type of program and we wish our fans luck as they seek out our hidden clues.”

It's impressive that Angry Birds, which has been downloaded more than 700 million times in all its forms, has become so big that Rovio can arrange a deal with the world's biggest retailer.

Angry Birds Space arrives on Android, iOS, Mac, and PC on March 22. Rovio said that it will also launch in animation, retail, and publishing. It's a first for Rovio and, the company noted, a first for any mobile game.
