'New iPad' launch sales eclipse Apple, AT&T records

Both Apple and one of its partners, AT&T, released details on the sales of the "new iPad" which launched on Friday, March 16. On Monday, Apple said that in less than four days it had sold three million of its next-generation tablet. Meanwhile, AT&T said that the launch day of the new iPad set a new single-day sales and activations record of Apple's tablet on its network.

In its first 24 hours, sales for AT&T's version of the new 4G LTE-capable iPad sales were the greatest AT&T has ever seen for a new iPad model. However, the carrier did not give specific numbers for activations or details how many were sold in its stores or online.

Meanwhile, in the company's press release, Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Phill Schiller, said that “the new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet. Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can’t wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.”

By Friday, Schiller is referring to the expanded availability of the new iPad on this Friday, the 23rd. 24 new countries will launch the device on that day, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

The increased craze over Apple's tablet is obvious. The first iPad sold some 300K units in its first day and hit the 1M unit mark at 28 days. It reached 3 million units in about 80 days, while the "new iPad" has hit that number in under four days.
