Forget the numbers: next-gen Apple tablet to be iPad HD

New reports seem to confirm what we reported a few days ago: the next-generation iPad will not be the iPad 3, but the iPad HD, with HD for high-definition to match its 2,048 x 1,536 retina display, which quadruples the pixel density from the iPad and iPad 2.

The reports come from two separate sources (1, 2). Our own source, who maintains contacts at Apple despite no longer working there, had previously noted the possibility.

Despite what may seem to be an endless string of iDevices with numeric naming schemes, both the iPhone 3G and 3GS were not numerically named (the 3G referred to 3G vs. EDGE, and the S implied speed, as did the S on the iPhone 4).

The HD makes a lot of sense as the prime focus of many thus far on the new iPad is the much touted iPad "retina display."

It's been pointed out, though, that Apple is going to need to do some negotiating if it wants some domain names related to the iPad HD. iPadHD.com, iPadHD.co.uk, and iPadHD.biz have all been registered for some time. iPadHD.com has been registered since before the first iPad was announced, in fact.

Apple's iPad event is scheduled for 10 a.m. PST on Wednesday, March 7. The company is also expected to discuss other products, but the focus will be on the iPad HD.
