DirecTV App for iPad adds on-the-go video-on-demand streaming

In October 2011, DirecTV added added the ability to stream video over home networks to its iPad app. Wednesday, an update to the app was released (still apparently syncing to the various App Store servers) that adds the ability to stream video-on-demand (VOD) shows and movies over cellular and Wi-Fi anywhere.

Don't get TOO excited yet, though. Read the caveat carefully: it's only VOD shows and movies. Live TV streaming still requires a wi-fi connection to your home network. Also still missing is the ability to stream DVR content.

For Android fans, the biggest thing still missing is any of this functionality on Android.

The new feature is called DirecTV Everywhere. We'd add the word (Sorta) in front of the phrase because of its limitation to VOD only, but it's a step in the right direction. The new feature can be found on the DirecTV App for iPad (not to be confused with the standard DirecTV app).

The 1.5.0 update also adds a “social module” that lets you check on what your Twitter and Facebook "friends" are watching.

Naturally, you need to be a DirecTV subscriber to access the content, but that's not an issue if you're reading this, is it?
