Sony announces that official Android, iOS app 'coming soon'

Sony has announced that the official Sony Playstation app will soon be coming "soon" to both Android and iOS. The announcement came via a post on the Playstation blog.

The app will be a free download for iPhone and iPod Touch with OS 4 and above, and most Android handsets with a minimum of Android 1.6. It's not the PlayStation Phone that we've been hearing about, but it's a start.

The app will have the following features:
  • Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status.
  • Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.
  • Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation Blog.
  • Share your favourite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.
Those in the U.S. and North America will have to wait. The first version (1.0) will be available only in the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands.

Since it's free, it wouldn't be surprising to see the APK file uploaded somewhere that owners of Android phones in other countries could download and sideload it. With the exception, perhaps, of jailbroken iPhones, users will be out of luck if not in the aforementioned countries.
