Amazon.com's iPhone app adds bar code scanning

Amazon.com has added bar code scanning to its iPhone app. Users can now scan a barcode to instantly search the Amazon catalog, although this functionality is currently only available on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.

For once, iOS is playing catchup. Similar bar code scanning functionality was already available in Amazon.com's Android app, in its Amazon Remembers function.

Also, for those who might want to price compare at more places than Amazon.com, Google added bar code scanning to its Google Product Search for mobile last year.

Of course, this additional functionality just means more Best Buy, Radio Shack, and even Wal-Mart "associates" will look askance at anyone holding a smartphone up to a bar code, if they haven't already.
