AT&T earlier detailed its own version of the Galaxy S, the Captivate earlier.
While the first really powerful Android phone on that network, it's still crippled by AT&T's App Store-like restriction against side-loading apps.
Meanwhile, no other carrier seems to implement that restriction, so we assume that T-Mobile won't either. The T-Mobile version will be called the Samsung Vibrant, and based on the Super AMOLED screen of the device, it certain is.
T-Mobile has a countdown page for still more details, such as (perhaps) a ship date, but here is what the carrier already said:
HardwareThe Vibrant will unfortunately ship with Android 2.1, but there's little doubt that it will get 2.2 (Froyo) later.
- The Vibrant offers a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor which is optimized for superior media viewing and game play.
- The Vibrant has a 4.0-inch Super AMOLED touch screen display that gives you a bright, vivid viewing experience.
- The Vibrant benefits from enhanced speeds with T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, but it’s not an HSPA+ device (huh!)
- The Vibrant is one of the slimmest smartphones on the market. The dimensions are 4.82” x 2.54” x 0.39”; weighs 4.16 oz.
- The Vibrant’s 5 MP camera is equipped with digital zoom and autofocus. Comes with an HD video recorder too! (yes, but no front-facing camera as in the European version and no flash)
The loss of the flash and front-facing camera is disappointing, but puts the phone in the Captivate category, but with the addition of side-loading.
While T-Mobile's date for details appears to be Monday, Samsung has already sent invitations to a Tuesday night event to unveil a "new class of brilliant Android smart phones." Those are likely to be Galaxy S phones across carriers, as well as hopefully some information on rumored Galaxy S Pro phones, as well.
