Wobble had almost a million downloads in the preceding year. This is a relatively new crackdown, but it seems to have already hit 5K applications in the App Store already. According to the developer, he's received information on the New Rules, and here they are:
It's interesting that Apple is gradually going through the App Store looking for these. Yet big names like the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2010 (and 2009) are still in the App Store. Is that because it's a big name behind it, Time? It certainly couldn't be because it was overlooked, can it?
- No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either)
- No images of men in bikinis! (I didn’t ask about Ice Skating tights for men)
- No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry)
- No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs (yes – I am serious, we have to remove the silhouette in this pic)
- No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex – all banned
- Nothing that can be sexually arousing!! (I doubt many people could get aroused with the pic above but those puritanical guys at Apple must get off on pretty mundane things to find Wobble “overtly sexual!)
- No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content (not sure how Playboy is still in the store, but ...)
Oh, look, the official Playboy app is still in the App Store, too.
It's bad enough that Apple is doing this, but it's worse if they are playing favorites. Anyone remember that when the Google App first came out it was using undocumented APIs for some of its functionality, yet it was still approved? Google even admitted the act, which violated the terms of the SDK, yet they still didn't get kicked out.
These sorts of things are bad enough, but if Apple plays favorites, it's indefensible.
