While undoubtedly (or hopefully) Google realized that selling actual hardware was going to present a problem when it came to their non-existent consumer goods phone support, it still has caused customers a great deal of angst. It's possibly part of the reason that sales have been far short of other hyped app phones.
According to mobile analytics firm Flurry Analytics, the Nexus One, which launched last week exclusively through Google's new online cell phone "retail" outlet, sold only 20,000 devices in its first week of sales. In that past that might have been considered good, but compared to other devices ...
For example, Motorola sold 250,000 Droids in its first week, the myTouch 3G sold 60,000, and let's not even discuss the iPhone 3GS. All right, we will: the iPhone 3GS sold 1.6 million in its first week (but that's the iPhone, right?).
Flurry said that there are a number of reasons for the Nexus One "opening week," despite the fact it has the most mature (2.1) Android version of any device.
One is that the device is evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. Of course, that didn't stop the iPhone 3GS vs. the iPhone 3G. Two is that Google didn't bombard people with ads, as Motorola / Verizon did with the Droid. Three is that Google chose the post-holiday season to launch.
It also doesn't help that the only way to buy the phone is online, and that consumers can't try out the device before buying. T-Mobile as a carrier doesn't help, although if the unlocked version supported 3G on AT&T it wouldn't be such an issue.
As Google said when they launched the device, this is a new model in terms of a way for consumers to buy a cell phone. It will probably improve as time goes on, but Google has a ways to go to be a direct supplier of consumer hardware.
Oh, and let's not overhype the darn thing. It's no "superphone," no matter what Google thinks.
