Mysterious Google UFO Doodles Explained: Happy Birthday, H.G. Wells

The mystery is solved, or at least, the reasons behind the mysterious Google Doodles over the last few weeks have been revealed. It looks like the theories running around the Internet were correct, in fact.

We were correct that the September 5th doodle, posted with the abduction of their second 'o' and a related tweet: 1.12.12 25.15.21.18 15 1.18.5 2.5.12.15.14.7 20.15 21.19, which translates into "All your O are belong to us" was a "tribute" to the Japanese video game, Zero Wing. At the same time it was related to the overall mystery.

Ten days later, a crop circle-related doodle, along with the tweet, which said "51.327629, -0.5616088 http://twitpic.com/hsfgl. Those coordinates lead to, not crop circles, but when mapped in Google Earth, , the center of the small town of Horsell in Surrey. This was the location where H.G. Wells set the first UFO landing in his novel "The War of the Worlds."

Aha, we wondered. Sept. 21st would be the 143 anniversary of the birth of H.G. Wells. Was Google setting up a tribute to Wells? The Internet giant admitted so today, with both their final doodle, as well as a blog post.

While dated as a book, it's been made into a fairly recent Tom Cruise sci-fi blockbuster thriller, though the ending is still the same. I won't give it away, but most of you probably know it anyway.

The only bad thing is that some had theorized Google was leading up to some new product; obviously that wasn't the case.
