Mob Keeps Google Street View Car From Taking Pictures

Be proactive: rather than protest the inclusion of your residence in Google's Street View with a lawsuit afterwards, keep the Street View car from taking pictures in the first place. That's what happened in the U.K., in Broughton, in Buckinghamshire, where a mob kept a Street View car from taking pictures.

Apparently it is a rather affluent area, but had been subject to some burglaries of late, and thus the residents were hypersensitive. From their comments, they were concerned, for one, that pictures of their neighborhood might encourage further crime, as Paul Jacobs told the Times Online:
“I was upstairs when I spotted the camera car driving down the lane. My immediate reaction was anger; how dare anyone take a photograph of my home without my consent? I ran outside to flag the car down and told the driver he was not only invading our privacy but also facilitating crime.

“This is an affluent area. We’ve already had three burglaries locally in the past six weeks. If our houses are plastered all over Google it’s an invitation for more criminals to strike. I was determined to make a stand, so I called the police.”
Google only recently launched Street View in the U.K. It has been criticized by both citizens and organizations such as Privacy International.

Jacobs ran around the village, rousing fellow residents. While he also called the police, the villagers stood in the road. The driver eventually turned around and left.

That's one town that's just marked itself out as being occupied by idiots.
"How dare anyone photograph my house without my consent!"
So he owns the light that's been reflected off his precious building does he?
How about if someone draws a sketch? Or uses an Etch-A-Sketch?
Or remembers how it looks and then describes it to someone else?
Sounds like a typical Daily Mail reader to me!

bil,

Street view has really helped me when plotting out where I should go using google maps. It really helps to see the terrain at ground level so that you can know you are close by recognizing landmarks.

It's a good thing these people aren't famous. They'd be getting their houses photographed all the time. Who stops the paparazzi? No one.

Is it an invasion of privacy? Quite possibly, depending what exactly ends up on the video.

Will it cause crime? I think not. Locals are already aware of where the "affluent" live, and they choose to live there.

Interesting topic. Food for thought. Thanks for posting!

I hate to tell you this, but legally, I can walk along pretty much any street I want (including yours) AND from those streets, I can look at any house I want (including your caravan).

People are such frigging whingers.

Choosing a car is bit difficult , since in the market wide range of cars are available. You need to consult an expert who can compare different branded cars. I prefer Eu Neuwagen to consult and get the right brand.

Google Streetview has come in useful several times already in my line of work. People call in and describe a place in which they are currently located. Imagine my delight when I can actually look around the area they are in and find the landmark they speak of and locate them perfectly. This would be an excellent idea for the emergency services. "Where are you?" "I'm on that 40 mile road between X and Y, next to a phone box..." Try finding that phonebox without Streetview. Anyone who has a problem with Streetview needs to get over it, welcome the 21st Century into their life with open arms and stop being so paranoid.
