What with a new SDK and new OS to be intro'ed by Apple next week, rumors have arisen (again) that the App Store will be getting a premium section, one with apps priced at $19.99 or higher. This rumor first arose in January, but vanished after a while. It's unclear why they've suddenly come to the fore again, but it does make sense.
Many believe that any App Store app above $4.99 is too pricey, and as such the store is full of low-priced games. But Apple has positioned the iPhone as a gaming platform, and it's widely expected that the next iPhone will have better performance and graphics, making it more attractive to developers and publishers.
But EA and Activision aren't going to be attracted if the median price point continues to be so low. Take a look at the top 100 paid apps on AppShopper and at the time of this writing the highest priced app in that list is Cooking Mama at #31 ($6.99).
While I would hope they don't have any ideas of shipping $59.99 iPhone games, $20 might be reasonable.
Of course, this is all speculation, and I'm already ticked that I will be tempted to buy new iPhone HW (sigh). More on Tuesday.
