And the #1 Catalog Track on iTunes, With 2 Million in Sales, is ...

What track to you think is the number one "catalog track" on iTunes? In fact, it's become the first catalog track to reach 2 million in sales.

Well, if you watched the recent "Let's Rock" iPod event, you might think it was a song by Jack Johnson, who is apparently the No. 1 selling male artist of all time on iTunes (which surprised me more than a little). But no, it's the word "catalog" that makes the difference.

A catalog track is a song released prior to the digital era, but later re-released as a digital download.

And our big winner is, Journey's Don't Stop Believin', originally released in 1981. According to the press release, the song has received help from TV shows in the recent history.

If you watched the final episode of the Sopranos in June 2007, you'll remember that the climactic final scene to the series (and some would say disappointing) had Don't Stop Believin' as its background music. Download sales of the song on iTunes rocketed an incredible 482% for the period from Saturday, June 9th (the night before "The Sopranos" finale) through Tuesday, June 12th.

Meanwhile, "appearances" on Laguna Beach and Family Guy have also help the song's sales, boosting them in the weeks following.

Sony Music Entertainment Commercial Music Group president John Ingrassia said:
"They are one of the most important artists we have. We're constantly working with the band and our team to create new products or highlight the catalog."
Congratulations, Journey (and Sony). And now, let's take a look at that Sopranos finale:
