Microsoft Unveils Windows Mobile 6.1 ... Whoopee

Tuesday at CTIA in Las Vegas, Microsoft took the wraps off of Windows Mobile 6.1. My reaction: whoopee.

Here are the bullet points from Microsoft's WM 6.1 website:
  • Instant messaging-like texting
  • Improved Internet browsing
  • Simpler e-mail and Bluetooth setup
  • New Home screen interface
  • New Getting Started Center
  • Security enhancements
  • Easier Wi-Fi connection
  • More personal choice
What the heck does "more personal choice" mean? I've seen WM 6.1, and it's not even evolutionary, more incremental, and certainly not revolutionary.

The Home screen interface changes involve something called the "Sliding Panel Home Screen." A bubble known as a "sliding panel" (hence the name) highlights and magnifies selections as you scroll up and down the screen (as pictured above).

The SMS change gives users the ability to see a series of short message service (SMS) threads in one IM-like view. But geez, that's been on my wife's non-WM non-smartphone cellphone for a looooong time.

Internet Explorer gets a decent overhaul, with (finally) the ability to see a full web page and then zoom in to the portion of the web page you want to read, much as in Opera Mini or the iPhone's Safari browser. Of course, they haven't improved the speed of the darn thing.

And Mobile IE's so sophisticated, too since, as the Microsoft press release says, it takes "advantage of Internet Explorer 6 technologies." Wow.

In their press release, Microsoft announced the following new phones:

Carriers:
  • Alltel Wireless: HTC PPC6800, HTC Touch
  • AT&T: Samsung BlackJack II, MOTO Q 9h global, Pantech duo, AT&T Tilt by HTC

The really lame thing is that it only works with Windows Vista computers... haven't they realized yet that a lot of their customers have given up on Vista and gone back to XP? Like I said, LAME!
